Five Heads from Hell
Baldur’s Gate is a metropolis and city-state on the Sword Coast and Western Heartlands blend, on the north bank of the river Chionthar about twenty miles east from its mouth on the Sea of Swords. It is located to the south of the great city-state of Waterdeep and to the north of the country of Amn, and is located along the well-traveled Coast Way road.
In ancient times, the seafaring human hero Balduran would return from Anchrome with great wealth. Balduran would use this wealth to build a wall amongst the end of the Chionthar river. Balduran would later vanish, never to return. After Balduran vanished, local farmers would take control of the wall and begin to tax sailors who would come in. The sailors would overthrow the ruthless farmers and the four eldest would take control, calling themselves “dukes.”
Despite the Time of Troubles, The Madness of Dragons, and the Spellplague Baldur’s Gate continues to be led by the Council of Four, the Four Grand Dukes of the City, decedents of the four sailors. Although once the city contested many others for the title of most populous city on the Sword Coast, the Spellplagues arrival created a situation which would double Baldur’s Gate’s population and area, and the growth continues to this day.
The city’s growth has brought about the creation of two additional districts, and divided the day to day administration of each district under one of the Lords affairs. Bloomridge, remains where the wealthy live. Twin Songs, once the homes of the sailors and the clerics has become the environs of the merchant class, though scholars and clerics still find bastion in its manicured walls. The Docklands has become the new home for sailors, traders, mercenaries and the middle classes. The Wilds are the underclasses realm, The only true district on the distaff side of the Black Dragon Gate, Baldurian Police owe much of the peace and relative safety of this area to rangers and druids of the Enclave.
Of old the city was the last to join The Lords Alliance, in the current age the reforged alliance owes its founding to the Grand Dukes.
